Americans love listening to books. In fact, in the past month 75% of the U.S. population listened to some form of spoken word audio be it radio, podcast, or audiobook. Fueled mostly by young adults, spoken word audio listening has increased 40% over the last seven years and 8% in the last year alone. Avid readers have become avid listeners.

The reasons vary for spoken word’s growing popularity. Americans report enjoying spoken word audio because it allows them to do multiple things at once, but also for gaining a sense of connection, new perspectives, self-improvement, humor, and lifelong learning. Whether listening while driving, doing yard work or exercise, listening to other humans speak has become a meaningful part of our day.

If you are an experienced spoken word listener or you would like to start listening, your Great Falls Public Library card gives you access to more than 30,000 audio or ebooks through Montana Library2Go on the Libby app. You can listen or read on your smart device by downloading the Libby app or in your computer’s browser at www.libbyapp.com/library/montana.
