Online Databases Great Falls Public Library offers access to a number of research databases and indexes. These databases are made available in part from funds allocated by the Montana State Legislature. Please let your library and your legislators know how important access to this material is to you. Some of the databases below are subscription databases that may require a password or a user ID. If you are prompted for that information, please call the Great Falls Public Library Information Desk at (406)-453-0349. Gale Virtual Reference Library "A database of encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research. These reference materials once were accessible only in the library, but now you can access them online from the library or remotely 24/7. Because each library creates its own eBook collection, the content you see may vary if you use the database at different libraries." Junior Edition K12 "Designed for students in elementary and middle school with access to a variety of indexed and full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books for information on current event, the arts, science, popular culture, helth, people, government, history, sports and more." NOTE FROM NOLA: I found this database to be extremely easy to navigate with kid friendly graphics. Kids InfoBits "Developed especially for beginning researchers in Kindergarten through Grade 5, features a developmentally appropriate, visually graphic interface, the most popular search method is moving from a broad subject to a narrower topc using the subject-based topic tree. the curriculum-related, age appropriate, full-text content is from the best elementary reference sources and magazines. This database covers geography, current events, the arts, science, health, people, government, history, sports and more." What Do I Read Next? "Includes over 122,300 recommended titles, more than 66,700 plot summaries, and awards information from 568 awards, all to help users uncover new reading adventures, find long-remembered favorites, and discover award-winning titles. Search by genre, subject, author, title, series, and more. A monthly highlights page allows the user to see selections of award winners, upcoming titles, and titles that revolve around different subjects each month." This site provides an overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of each planet and the major moons in our solar system. Each page has text and NASA images, some have sounds and movies, most provide references to additional related information. Science Fair Projects Looking for a science fair project? Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum "There are 356 aircraft in the collection of the National Air and Space Museum (NASM). Most of these aircraft are described and summarized online. Full color maps and country flags are also provided. First Gov for Kids Learn about careers, computers, fighting crime, the arts, geography, United States government, and twelve other topics. The History Channel To find out what happened on a certain day in history, click on this link. It will also give you information about World War I, World War II, the Cold War, Vietnam War, Wall Street, crime, the old west, etc. The classroom feature has links to numerous categories; including speeches, study guides, and presentations. Biographies African American Biographies Offers over sixty biographical sketches of African Americans and their impact in history. Your Dictionary.com This site presents the American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language 4th edition and allows you to browse or search for a word's meaning, pronunciation, and translation. Math Ask Dr. Math Sponsored by Math Forum at Drexel University in Philadelphia, this site demonstrates math concepts for elementary, middle school, high school, and college students. Webmath.com Shows you how to solve math problems from addition to geometry to college calculus. Other American Library Association Access multiple resources for parents, teens, and kids.
